Are you a photographer looking to improve your skills behind the camera? Well, here’s a secret: get in front of it!
As a photographer, you may have friends who are also photographers and would love to swap headshot sessions or model calls to be a part of. Take advantage of this opportunity and get in front of the camera. Here’s how it can help you improve your skills:
1. It lets you know how it feels. Being in front of a camera can be nerve-racking, and as a photographer, you may not realize this. By putting yourself in your clients’ shoes, you can empathize with them and refer to your experiences to make them feel more comfortable.
2. You get to learn a new way of doing things. Looking through another photographer’s website or Instagram doesn’t let you experience their process. By being in front of their camera, you can learn how they talk to clients, try something new with posing and lighting, and learn new ways to direct your clients’ poses.
3. It tells your clients that you value photography. By investing in yourself and your own photography experience, you show your clients that you practice what you preach.
I learned the best while being in front of the camera. I had booked a session with a more experienced photographer than me. While the photographer’s work was incredible, she didn’t give any direction at all, it left me feeling lost and unsure of what to do. This experience helped me understand the pain that clients can feel when left in the dark in front of the camera.
So, don’t be afraid to get in front of the camera and experience what your clients feel. It can help you improve your skills and provide a better experience for your clients.
