As I venture into the wedding planning for our wedding along with being in the industry for 15 years now, I know the importance of reducing wedding stress. So here I am creating content to try to help you through this process, even if we aren't a great fit for eachother I'm happy for you and excited to help in any way I can.
Most couples choose their ceremony time based on what “sounds normal.”
But your ceremony time impacts:
Honestly? It impacts almost everything.
And here in Alberta, where our daylight changes drastically throughout the seasons, ceremony timing matters even more.
Why 2 PM Summer Ceremonies Are So Difficult
I know this might be unpopular…
But 2 PM summer ceremonies are honestly one of the hardest timelines for weddings.
Especially in Alberta summers.
At 2 PM:
And if your family photos happen immediately after the ceremony?
Now you’re doing portraits around 3 PM in full heat and harsh sunlight.
People are sweaty. Hungry. Overstimulated.
Even the most beautiful venue struggles in that lighting.
The Best Summer Ceremony Times for Alberta Weddings
If you’re doing all of your family photos, bridal party photos, and couple portraits after the ceremony, I honestly believe later ceremony times create a much better experience.
A 4 PM ceremony is usually one of the strongest options for summer weddings.
Why?
Because:
Yes it’s true dinner may run slightly later.
But honestly? Most guests would rather enjoy:
than sit through a rushed, overheated afternoon.
And if you really want dreamy summer lighting?
I’d almost argue for an even later timeline.
One of my favourite options is:
That kind of timeline feels luxurious, relaxed, and incredibly beautiful in photos.
Fall Weddings Give You More Flexibility
Fall weddings are actually one of the easiest seasons to work with for lighting.
The sun softens earlier. Temperatures are cooler. Guests are more comfortable outside.
In fall, you can usually get away with:
But timing still depends heavily on one thing:
When are you doing photos?
If all portraits happen after the ceremony, we still need enough daylight for:
That’s why timeline planning should always happen alongside lighting conversations.
Not separately.
Winter Weddings Need a Completely Different Strategy
Winter weddings in Alberta are a totally different game.
Daylight disappears quickly.
Which means ceremony timing needs to shift earlier.
Personally, winter is the only season where I’d truly recommend:
And honestly? Those earlier ceremony times work beautifully in winter because:
But winter timelines require intentional planning because once daylight disappears, it disappears fast.
If portraits matter to you, we need to prioritize them earlier in the day.
Should You Do Photos Before or After the Ceremony?
This is one of the biggest timeline decisions couples make.
And it changes everything.
If you do:
before the ceremony…
you gain much more flexibility afterward.
Your cocktail hour becomes relaxed.
Your guests wait less.
Your evening flows more naturally.
But if you prefer doing photos after the ceremony, that’s completely okay too.
We just need to build your ceremony timing around the light we’ll have available afterward.
This is why wedding photography is about so much more than showing up with a camera.
Good photos start with good planning.
The Goal Isn’t Just Better Photos, it’s a Better Experience
The best wedding timelines don’t just create prettier images.
They create calmer wedding days.
Days where:
Beautiful wedding days are usually the result of intentional decisions long before the ceremony begins.
And honestly?
Lighting is one of the biggest ones.
