There’s a very specific moment that happens at almost every wedding where bad weather shows up.

The forecast changes.

The wind picks up.

Someone starts panic-Googling radar screenshots.

And suddenly, couples start imagining their entire wedding day being “ruined” because it might rain… or because Alberta decided to bring 40km wind gusts for absolutely no reason. 😅

But can I tell you something after photographing over 300 weddings?

Some of the most emotional, cinematic, joy-filled wedding photos I’ve ever taken happened in the middle of weather that absolutely was NOT part of the plan.

And honestly? I think part of the reason those photos feel so special is because the couples stopped trying to control the day and started experiencing it instead.

The Couples Who Embrace The Weather Always End Up With The Best Stories

Nobody remembers the wedding day where everything went perfectly.

They remember:

• The veil flying sideways during portraits
• Running through the rain together
• Laughing while everyone held the dresses down
• The wind catching the veil at exactly the right moment during the ceremony and it ends up in a tree (true story and a perfect candid moment with a story to tell forever)
• Huddling close because it was freezing outside
• Dancing in the rain because there was literally no other option

Those are the moments that feel alive.

And that energy translates into photos in the BEST way.

Because perfect weather is beautiful… but movement, emotion, and real reactions? That’s what makes photos unforgettable.

Windy Wedding Days Are Actually Kind Of Magic

I know wind is probably not what most brides are hoping for when they picture their wedding day.

But truly? Wind creates movement. And movement creates emotion in photos.

The dress flows.

The veil lifts.

Hair moves naturally.

People lean into each other more.

Everything feels a little less stiff and a little more alive.

Some of my favourite wedding portraits ever happened on days where the wind was absolutely chaotic.

And yes — maybe a few hairs were out of place.

But nobody looks back at those photos thinking:

“Ugh, one strand of hair moved.”

They think:

“That felt exactly like us.”

That’s the difference.

Rain Does Not Ruin Wedding Photos

I think couples sometimes assume rainy wedding photos automatically mean dark, gloomy, miserable images.

But rain photographs SO beautifully when couples are willing to lean into it.

Cloudy skies soften light in the most flattering way.

Rain creates mood and movement.

Clear umbrellas are iconic for a reason.

And honestly? Couples naturally get closer together when it rains.

Which creates connection.

And connection is always what makes a photo work.

Now obviously, there are moments where we pivot indoors for family photos or to keep everyone comfortable. We’re not trying to soak Grandma before dinner.

But for couple portraits?

Even stepping outside for ten minutes can create some of the most romantic images of the entire day.

The Secret Is Letting Go Of “Perfect”

I think the couples who love their wedding galleries the most are usually the couples who stop asking:

“How do we make this look perfect?”

And start asking:

“How do we fully experience this?”

Because your wedding day is a real memory. Not a styled shoot.

And sometimes the weather becomes part of the story in the best possible way.

Years from now, you probably won’t remember the exact forecast.

But you WILL remember:

• laughing in the rain
• the wind catching your veil
• everyone screaming while decorations almost flew away
• how close you felt standing together in the middle of the chaos

And honestly? Those are usually the photos people treasure the most.

The Best Wedding Photos Feel Like Memories

At the end of the day, the goal isn’t perfectly controlled wedding photos.
